Painting In Progress
Many
artists do not like showing their work until
it is completed. I am not one who
subscribes to that philosophy. So below I will be posting an updated
photo on current works that are in process and in different states of
completion. It is hoped that this will generate interest in the work
and let the viewer have both a history of how it was done as well as
some of the technique involved. Paintings may or may not have
titles, rough ideas and names of the work are in my mind. But until
finished completely; a final title is usually not given.

The first step in any painting for me is to get the white of the paper covered. This makes it less intimidating and easier to continue to the finer points of the work. Unlike many watercolorists, I try to get the darkest parts of the painting in as early as possible so that overall values can be adjusted. The shiny-white is miskit. I don't usually use this much, but there are a lot of effects I need to do once I turn my attention to the little falls and ripples. |
At this point, most of the darks have been established. There is still friskit on the areas needed to remain white. A larger area of white, blue non-stick painting tape is used so friskit is not wasted. The water patterns over the small falls and ripples are established more. The area of rocks are worked up using spatter of paint and cracking is painted in with small thin brushes. The potholes were painting prior to covering them with tape and friskit. Friskit is also spattered like paint on the rocks for later removal. Shadows will be painted on the right foreground rocks and up the right side of the painting to breakup the monotony of the same colors. Once that is completed and falls are formed up with small brush strokes; the friskit will be peeled off with a rubber pickup and the tape removed. |
